International Year of The Mountain 2002

I was asked by Meryl Carr, Highland Council Countryside Ranger, to run a workshop over one weekend, in Ullapool, Ross-shire. The idea was to try to marry poetry and photography in some way. I decided to select an excerpt from the poem 'A Man in Assynt' by Norman McCaig, and set this as a brief for the class to interpret in their own way, using a digital Canon G2. The excerpt speaks passionately about the overpowering physical presence of the Assynt landscape, but also provides strong comment on the political landscape of the highlands. The class comprised five women and no men. The images below are a selection from the two days. The time we had available was too short, the weather was awful on Saturday, but the results are very very impressive! This was the first time I had attempted anything of this nature using digital equipment, and I must say it is an excellent way to work. Look here for the excerpt from 'A Man in Assynt"
