I spent a few weeks in October leading a photography tour to Yellowstone NP in the USA, with Pete Cairns for Wildshots. We stayed a few days in Mammoth Hot Springs where the resident female elk are joined by many enormous rutting males. Fighting, chasing and mating all takes place in the main street with a cohort of Park Rangers there to protect the public - not from the elk - but from their own stupidity in getting too close.
